Location
There are over 7000 islands in the Philippines, and around 2000 of these are inhabited. It would take over 20 years to explore all of them! The Philippines has a population of around 80 million people, two thirds of which make their living from the land. The main crop is rice, and the country is also the second largest producer of Copra (dried coconut) and coconut products in the world. Boracay Island is located in the Western Visayas, at the northern tip of Panay Island. The famous White Beach is considered one of the best in the world, with it's powdery white sand and warm clear water. |
Map The island is divided into 3 zones (known locally as "Barangays"). At the northern end is Yapak, the centre is Balabag and the southern end is called Manoc Manoc.White Beach is the most popular (and developed) beach in Boracay. This is also where most of the hotels are situated. It is divided into 3 areas - boat stations 1, 2 and 3. |
White Beach The area to the north of boat station 1 is where you'll find most of the expensive, luxury resorts. There are also some nice restaurants in this area. Popular nightspots here include Cocomangas (home of the famous 15 shooters), Club Paraw, and Pier One (attracts the young Manila crowd).Boat station 2 is the party zone. This is where most of the bars and restaurants are located. There is a busy shopping mall where you can buy souvenirs, clothes and budget meals. Accomodation in this area is less expensive than at station 1, but the downside is that it is quite noisy, and the beach is crowded. Many of the hotels and bars hold sponsored events on the beach during high season, and it can be very chaotic. South of station 3 is much more peaceful, reminiscent of the "old" Boracay. This is where most of the budget accomodation is located, there is a much more laid back and friendly vibe - no pounding disco music. As you can see from this picture, the beach is less crowded too. |
Beach Games After the heat of the day, the more energetic folks gather for a lively game of beach volleyball or tennis. The rest of us just sit about drinking! |
Treasures from the Sea... They don't look real, do they? If you visit Bulabug Beach you can find loads of interesting things on the shoreline and in rockpools. Just be sure to return them to the sea when you have finished looking at them. |
Banca Boats These little motorised boats are the main form of transportation between the islands, and they set the scene for some beautiful sunset photos. |
Full Moon Night Groups of people gather on the beach during the full moon to admire this beautiful scene. If you can stay up late enough you'll get to see the moon-set. A full moon sailing trip is also a good way to enjoy it. |
